Your favorite female artists

Post by Myy » 09 Sep 2018 16:55

I'm looking for some new music to listen to and would love to have some recommendations from fellow radfems. I'd be especially interested to get to know about artists and bands with some feminist vibe. So please, share your knowledge of creative musicians with powerful female voices! :icon_e_smile:

OMG. Sinead O'Connor!
What a great female artist.
And best latest perfomance live:

She's an artist I've been listening to since I was 13! :D

I'm really in to Scary Bitches. They're not radfems, very tongue in cheek, and
always fun to listen to. One of my favourite songs is Lesbian Vampyres from Outta Space. ... KjdlDX0KWk

I avoid overtly political music so idk how much of this will scratch your itch but I have an Official List (not necessarily female-fronted since us female musicians in bands with male vocalists get overlooked too often):
Code Orange
Ides of Gemini
Jex Thoth
Kero Kero Bonito
Lebanon Hanover
Pastel Ghost
Paula Temple
and of course Zola Jesus
Tentatively including these even though they're kind of one hit wonders, imo, but the hits are amazing:
(((major guilty pleasure alert)))Hannah Diamond:
Sleep∞Over/Stefanie Franciotti:

amazing musicians that i'd recommend to anyone: Ana Tijoux - chilenian feminist rap artist Rebeca Lane - i'm not usually into reggae, but i like hers a lot and especially her voice Switchblade Symphony - imho largely underrated 90s Gothic/TripHop duo, if you're into that sort of thing, if not, also try it out, their sounds and vocals are truly bewitching! ;) Little Simz - UK rap artist Antoinette - 90s NY rapper Grausame Töchter - German gothic lesbian industrial artists, not necessarily feminist at all, but very entertaining to listen to bc they're very anti-male (they sing in german tho, this song i especially like bc in it she's ranting about being stared at by disgusting ill-bred old men in public, also "NUR MÄDCHEN DÜRFEN MICH ANFASSEN!!!" (=only girls may touch me!!!)

Well, that's all i could come up with right now, i might add more or i could think of more in a specific genre if any1 would be interested.

Nedra Johnson!
This is an ode to the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival:

(All these voices are her...she’s a second alto who records on top of herself)

One I'm listening to as I write: Faye Wong. Known as Wang Fei in China, she can't really be described as feminist, but she is very female! She's fab.

Amanda Palmer is a good one, and a song that is especially powerful is Mr Weinstein Will See You Now, and it's about exactly what you'd expect.

Eliza Carthy. And one of the most gorgeous female voices I've ever heard, Karen Matheson.

more from me:

If you're into kickass d&b, check out Robyn Chaos. Unfortunately i think she's more of a DJ than a producer, since she has only a few tracks and i think all of them collaborations with other artists. Wonder why that is :/

Also, a gem from when i was a teenage girl: Kittie. Their 'take-no-shit'-attitude was a very important and neccessary example for 15-year-old me. They're still making music today, though I haven't listened to the newer albums.

Uhh, Doja Cat.... I sure like her smooth music (which is not solely produced by her), but i'm not entirely sure how i feel about all the self-objectification. I think she plays it out very much and there was this hilarious controversy surrounding her song & video 'Moo', in which she imho very obviously parodies female objectification. And all the males who like to sell us all the rape and woman-hatred in things like Game of Fucked Up Male Fantasies and the likes as 'CRITIIIIIQUE!! REE REE' went batshit bigot over this.
Lessons learned: Males objectifying us is critique of our objectification. Women self-objectifying, maybe even on purpose in order to get a point across, is no-no-dirty. It makes wee angsty dickies even more angsty! :(

More honorable mention because i think they're plenty well-known already: M.I.A. (producing herself, NOT Diplo!) and does anyone else remember Kelis and TLC? Their style and attitude is something DESPERATELY needed for girls in teenage times!!!
Also, interesting, Kelis, who more or less very abruptly ended her career to instead fulfill her wively and motherly duties (sigh), gave a real insightful interview about her marriage to Nas, who, surprise surprise, turned out to be a pathetic, weak, lame-ass, vile and exploitative loser - Just like every other man always turns out to be all the time, everywhere!!

Edit: Wow, thank you all for the nice new input! I like Scary Bitches and Buttress a lot!
