This forum will end on May 1st

Post by Peach » 21 Mar 2019 16:12

Sadly to announce that this forum will stop to exist on May 1st. That's within less than a year after it started.

Two reasons:
Apparently there's no need for a forum like this. It started with lots of posts, but the past months there are hardly any new posts. It's too quiet.
And then there's the spam problem that we can't get under control and deleting it takes time.

I don't know yet what I will do with this genderhammer.com domain name.
Ideas are welcome.

This makes me really sad. I'm pretty new here, but I've tried to post but getting so few responses was disappointing and I wondered if I was annoying people. All the sadder because I know women need each other and that we need to awaken other women. Sigh.

I've been thinking that women are all living behind enemy lines, but it is even worse than that. Women are conquered and it's been so long that we don't even have very much myth or memory that there was a before or could be an after. We're in trouble sisters.

Thanks, Sibyl.
You weren't annoying anyone. :icon_e_wink:
I think most women are still on Facebook and Twitter, although our ideas aren't welcome there. :icon_e_sad:

I've never done Twitter. I do have a FB account but a couple years ago I was scrolling through my feed and the nastiness and shallowness of the content just hit me. Not to mention that I think all of the screens are changing us cognitively and that the major social media outlets are observing us, mining our data and providing an easy way to propagandize (sic) the population.

I understand that there are radfem groups in FB and I might explore that.

Thank you for saying I wasn't annoying anyone. I just know that when I type with more than one finger that I can easily write thousands of words before I know it and that internet communication is more successful in shorter forms.

I like this site and will be sad to see it go. But I do understand why. I'll hang until the lights are turned out.

I cried a little yesterday after reading a guy on feminist current talk about how decreasing penalties for rape especially "non-violent" rape (short periods of house arrest were suggested) would both avoid ruining male lives and keep feminists happy. Reading you could see that this guy felt that as long as the raped woman wasn't hurt anymore than she would be with consensual PiV where was the harm?

Horrifying enough. But this was in the heels of realizing that the top three industries in the world are:

1. War, production of war materiel and all supporting and subsidiary industries. (I once read a statistic that over 50 percent of the U.S. Economy is in war production. Economy, NOT the federal budget.)
2. The production, sale and distribution of illegal drugs.
3. The objectification and sexual exploitation of women's bodies in prostitution, pornography, reproductive exploitation, beauty industry. Here I am NOT counting women's paid and unpaid labor or the exploitation of reproduction in socially normative ways, e.g. patriarchal marriage and other male centered reproductive arrangements.

The implications of this are astonishing if you can bear to think of them. Our planetary society and the use of global and human resources and labor are centered around activities that are wasteful, useless, violent and harmful to all living beings and creatures. I started thinking about this not first from a feminist perspective but in trying to theorize how we might start to address the hole we've dug ourselves in terms of maintaining life on the planet when the U.N. Reports on climate change, the oceans and agricultural, environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity and its effects on the ability to sustain life started being released in October.

Maybe we could baby-step by first eliminating waste I thought to myself. That is a place to start and might buy us time to plan. This of course led to thoughts about distribution issues, redesigning the token economy and to trying to learn some formal economics. The theory of Land Rent and Surplus (both Marxist and traditional economics) led to the realization that a huge portion of 'surplus' in a capitalist model IS waste. If we remove waste from our economic system we crash the entire system. Waste is a feature not a bug. That system is entrenched and global. A system with waste, violence and uselessness as central but obscured principles.

The exploitation and waste of women by every conceivable means is central to that system: sexual objectification/exploitation/slavery, dismissed unpaid labor and formal labor. The waste of people, especially women is also central to this catastrophe. It seems women should be able to do something with this but women as a class have been conquered and living behind enemy lines for so long that the idea of a time when we weren't conquered (and by extension a future where we are free) is so effectively inconceivable we barely have myth about it. Worst of all, the vast majority of women live in variations of denial so that we can survive the day to day.

Reading a man theorize how to normalize and institutionalize rape even further? With all of this already on my mind? That is when two tears of the most profound sorrow slid down my cheeks before I got myself under control. I just can't imagine women building systems and societies with the destruction of the society built into the system. Even taking into account the strength and expedience of the survival instinct and theoretically removing women's socialization/brainwashing I can't imagine women being so needlessly destructive. I'm not even certain women are capable of being as offensive as we need to be to cope with the scourge of men and male societies and systems. we keep giving men the benefit of the doubt despite all evidence And repeated betrayals. We do this out of compassion. And yet, somehow we're viewed and defined as less than human.

Note: Just for the sake of argument, let's say the planet isn't in trouble and environmental degradation and climate change are propagandist lies told by science and government for over forty years. I don't believe that but for the sake of argument. Even if that was somehow true, a lie on that scale for no clear purpose raises concerns almost as harrowing as the destruction of the biosphere.

Could a private Facebook group be a possibility? I’m certainly guilty of not posting here, but I have really appreciated its existence. I mod a single mums Facebook group and think it allows people to connect and also share articles etc and little more easily?

Just an idea. Thank you for having put this out there anyway.

There are many gender critical / radical feminist closed Facebook groups. They're easily to find. I enjoy these groups. But every once in a while some of get suspended for saying that men aren't women. Facebook and Twitter are men's platforms.

This is sad news, Peach. I’m guilty of not reading posts or replying, for sure, but I felt as though this site was essential as a sort of centralised news hub for women that wouldn’t censor radical and lesbian voices. I still think it’s essential because I suspect more censorship on other platforms is yet to come, but I have no idea how anyone could get a majority of radical feminists worldwide to show up all in one online place. It’s also too much to wish for, because I already find it exhausting to follow less than fifty people on YouTube, and I’m not even on Twitter and I don’t use Facebook for activism, I barely read blogs anymore, and as for any other platforms I’m too old to even know what they are!
I think format is an issue, with anything these days. I like YouTube because my notifications feed is small, and when people post I can often set their videos to play and spend an hour doing something else like cleaning or cooking or whatnot, if it’s mainly an audio post. If there’s a YouTube post that requires watching AND listening, it has to be shorter or I get interrupted by life.
I’m so tired I find it takes a lot of energy to scroll through many comments or topics and then attend to the ones I’m interested in, which are usually numerous. I don’t know what to do about this, because I’d like to keep up with goings-on in the radfem world but if no one mentions it on YouTube, I won’t go on Twitter, Facebook or Mumsnet of my own accord.

I hope maybe we will see more posts from you on YouTube 😁. Your stuff is hilarious and spot-on, informative and well-presented, and you always take time to go through comments and answer questions. Thank you for everything you do, and thank you to the mods, too. It’s a lot of work.

I’ll hang on to genderhammer to the bitter end!

I’m sad to read this, and I understand your decision.

Understood.

And then there's the spam problem that we can't get under control and deleting it takes time.
Is it possible to require people’s first 2-3 comments to be reviewed before they are auto posted?

I don't know yet what I will do with this genderhammer.com domain name.

Even though I myself haven't posted in a while, sad to see the forum go.
Maybe the golden internet times of forums are just over :/ Anyway i can certainly understand why you'd stop. It was very nice while it lasted.

I know I haven't posted much recently, but I'm going to miss this forum a lot :(

Social media (fb, twitter & the like) is so dominated by TRAs that I felt like genderhammer was a refuge from all that. I don't want to join reddit, even though I'm lurking on the GC subreddit.

Thanks for creating this place Peach, I'm sorry to see it go.
